had I but world enough, and time | 12.12.06

…I’d read these books that I saw at work today. An except from the reading wishlist of a librarian who knows that she’ll never be able to read everything she wants to in only one lifetime!

I started a new job yesterday, which puts some distance between me and unpacking new books. I’m worried that I might not see as many books that I want to read. Even so….

+ A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius – Dave Eggers (adult, biography, orphans, brothers) Yes, this is the Dave Eggers of McSweeney’s. I’ve known about the book for a while, but I never looked in it until a visit to a bookstore over the weekend. The book is about Eggers’ efforts to raise his younger brother after they are orphaned. It includes “Rules and Suggestions for Enjoying This Book”, a seven-page preface that Eggers suggests that the reader skip over, and a lengthy acknowledgements section (also said to be skip-worthy) which includes a flow chart and a drawing of a stapler. Anything that begins that way has got to be worth a longer look.
