had I but world enough, and time | 11.27.06

…I’d read these books that I saw at work today. An except from the reading wishlist of a librarian who knows that she’ll never be able to read everything she wants to in only one lifetime!

+ Please Mr. Einstein – Jean-Claude Carriere, trans. by John Brownjohn (adult, fiction, translation, physics) This book is a dialogue between a student who discovers Einstein in an office about 60 years after his death. Sounds charming as translated books often are.

+ Marathon – W. William Winokur (adult, fiction, history, mythology, Greece, epic) I actually ran across this book a few months ago, remembered it as an intriguing tour-de-force of some kind or other. (It’s a story about a woman too busy to go to her father’s funeral and her trip to Greece with an old family friend she tracked down after going through her father’s things.) It turned up on a cart on Monday, and I recognized it as something that is on the list of things to read…someday.
