…I’d read these books that I saw at work today. An except from the reading wishlist of a librarian who knows that she’ll never be able to read everything she wants to in only one lifetime!
On Thanksgiving this year, I thought over the list of magazines and journals that I’d subscribe to if I had the money. (Check the prices and you’ll see what I mean.)
+ McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern – New fiction presented in radically different formats from issue to issue. One issue looked like three bundles of mail. Gotta love that! ($55.00 / 4 issues / 1 year)
+ Locus – The industry standard for science fiction and fantasy literature. It’s mostly on newsprint, and it’s filled with dense columns of the month’s publishing deals, paperback releases, and it always has great interviews. Every SF or fantasy reader should find one and flip through. ($56.00 for periodical rate; $66.00 for first class rate / 12 issues / 1 year, or you can buy a lifetime subscription for 10 times the yearly rate–$560 or $660, respectively)
+ Fortean Times – Preeminent British periodical for those seeking to explore unexplained rains of fishes, psi phenomena, Templar legends, or bizarre ways to die. Great fun! ($69.50 / 12 issues / 1 year at Amazon)
+ Newtype USA – An otaku’s dream. Full color glossy magazine filled with reviews of new anime and manga. It includes a manga issue insert as well as a DVD of one anime episode plus trailers for others. ($80.95 / 12 issues / 1 year if you subscribe online)
