All Otaku-ed Out

Well, in one 24 hour period I saw the first two episodes of the new Doctor Who and the last episode of Fullmetal Alchemist. I don’t know whether to laugh with delight or weep with loss. I’ve known for about 3 weeks that this would be a big weekend of otaku-ness for me, and it has been. I won’t be a spoilery spoiler who spoils, so here’s some spoiler space for Doctor Who.

Ah, now then. I can’t believe that they’ve managed to make a nearly perfect update to Doctor Who. I’m sure some fans may disagree, but I think that they’ve kept the best of the show, grew it up a tiny bit, and filmed it just as though it was on TV and naturally evolved this way over the 17 years it’s been out of production. Of course, part of the reason it feels evolved is that it has evolved. Seventeen years of New Adventure and BBC Books novels will keep you going. And that crappy Fox TV one-off thingamy which is canon because Sylvester McCoy was in it with a regeneration sequence. No disrespect to Paul McGann–I liked his Doctor, but it sucks that they blew an entire regeneration on him being the Doctor in one 2 hour pilot-to-nowhere. (Why can I hear Samuel L. Jackson lecturing John Travolta about pilots that become nothing??) Anyway, that makes McGann the 8th, and Eccleston the 9th Doctor. Since Eccleston has left, David Tennant is now the 10th Doctor. In case anyone has forgotten at the BBC, you only get 13 in one Time Lord lifespan. They are going to have to act fast to fix that if they keep going through Doctors at this rate.

Whew–having said all that, I was pleased with the new show, as there was a shot of a drier vent in a sort of orbiting grandstand six billion years into the future. Hurray–a better budget doesn’t equal less cheese. It’s just about the only healthy cheese you can snack on. 😉

Now for the spoiler space for FMA

WTF, man??? That completely sucks. I can’t believe that the price they had to pay was a) Al has to forget everything they’d done in the entire series and b) Ed and Al will never see each other again, maybe not even when they die and pass through the Gate. And was it me, or was that Fuhrer Bradley talking to Hoenheim about that Aryan race garbage after the occult meeting in Munich? Will Ed have to fight Bradley (again) in the world beyond the Gate in another war over alleged ethnic purity (again)? And why is Teacher going to teach Al–again– after what happened the last time? And did Dante waste the last of her power trying to fend off Greed and both died, or did one or the other escape? At least it seems clear that Hawkeye and Mustang finally hook up. I was really worried that he wouldn’t make it. (God, did I just say hook up? What is this post? Musings from the frat house? ;-D ) And why is the sky blue and not some other color? I sound like a three year old. I’m just crushed that the whole thing is over. Boo! I want more! But of course, another one would kind of suck in a way. The relationship between the brothers was what made this show work. If they’re apart trying to get back together, it’s just not the same thing. Al can’t get Ed back with alchemy without dying. Ed can’t get in a bloody spaceship in 1900-anything and find a way back to his own place and time. They are well and truly screwed and are going to spend the rest of their lives longing for something they can’t have. (Okay, Trent, now is the time to stop singing “I just want something I can never have” and get the heck out of my head. There’s way too much otaku-ness going on in there right now without the musical stylings of Nine Inch Nails happening, too!….

So, now that I’ve seen all of FMA, there is officially Not Crap on adultswim on Saturdays for a while, unless you count reruns of Venture Brothers, Cowboy Bebop and so forth. I don’t like some of the newer things that they have made. Let’s see…don’t like Perfect Hair Forever. Don’t like Squidbillies. And I don’t like Minoriteam. I wish they’d rerun something I didn’t get to see because I had a broken VCR and it came on at screwed up times, like Witch Hunter Robin and Read or Die (R.O.D.).

Anyway, one tired Otaku girl signing out.
